10 Things I Never Cruise Without
Whether you're a first-time cruiser or a seasoned sailor, packing smart makes all the difference between a stressful trip and a smooth, stylish voyage. After cruising more times than I can count, I've learned exactly what to bring β and what I can't live without.
Here are my 10 non-negotiables that always make it into my suitcase.
1. Magnetic Hooks
Cruise cabin walls are metal, which means magnetic hooks are a total game changer. I hang bags, lanyards, hats, and wet swimsuits on them. They free up so much space in a tiny cabin. Grab a pack of 6β8 before you go β you'll use every single one.
2. A Over-the-Door Shoe Organizer
Storage in cruise cabins is limited. I hang one of these on the bathroom door and fill it with sunscreen, makeup, medicine, snacks, and accessories. It keeps everything visible and off the tiny counter.
3. A Portable Power Strip (No Surge Protector)
Most cruise cabins have only one or two outlets β for a family or even just one person with multiple devices, that's never enough. A simple power strip (note: surge protectors are not allowed on most cruise lines) solves the problem instantly.
4. Reef-Safe Sunscreen
Many cruise destinations β especially in the Caribbean and Bahamas β require reef-safe sunscreen. Don't get caught without it at a port. I stock up before I leave because it's more expensive onboard.
5. A Crossbody Bag for Port Days
When you're exploring a port, you want your hands free and your valuables secure. A lightweight crossbody bag is perfect β it holds your ID, cash, phone, and sunscreen without weighing you down.
6. Seasickness Remedies
Even if you've never gotten seasick before, it's worth being prepared. I always pack motion sickness bands and Dramamine. The open ocean can be unpredictable, and the last thing you want is to spend a sea day in your cabin.
7. A Waterproof Phone Pouch
Whether you're at the pool, on a beach excursion, or doing water activities at a port, a waterproof phone pouch protects your phone and lets you take pictures in or near the water. It's a $10 item that saves a $1,000 phone.
8. Packing Cubes
I didn't use packing cubes for years and I deeply regret it. They compress your clothes, keep your suitcase organized, and make unpacking in your cabin so much easier. I use a different cube for each category β tops, bottoms, formal wear, swimsuits.
9. A Reusable Water Bottle
Staying hydrated on a cruise is important, especially on hot port days. While water is available onboard, having your own bottle means you're never searching for a glass. I bring a collapsible one that folds flat when empty.
10. A Light Cardigan or Wrap
Ships are notoriously cold inside β the dining rooms, theaters, and casino especially. Even if you're cruising somewhere warm, you'll want a light layer for evenings onboard. A cute cardigan or wrap works for both style and comfort.
Final Thoughts
Packing for a cruise doesn't have to be stressful. Start with these 10 essentials and you'll be ahead of most first-timers. The goal is to pack smart so you can focus on what really matters β enjoying every moment of your voyage.
